Washington homeowner FAQ
How do I check a contractor in Washington?
Use the L&I Verify a Contractor tool. It shows the registration, bond and insurance, and any lawsuits against the bond.
Do electricians and plumbers need a license in Washington?
Yes. Both are licensed by L&I, separate from general contractor registration, and you can check them with the same tool.
How do I deal with moss on my roof?
Have a roofer remove moss and check for lifted shingles, and keep gutters clean through the rainy season.
When should I service my heat pump?
Spring and fall. Heat pumps are common in western Washington, and summer heat waves have made cooling more important.
How do I prepare for wildfire smoke?
Ask an HVAC contractor about higher-rated filters or a portable air cleaner, especially east of the Cascades.
